Occasionally you may run across a Microsoft windows Update error like the following: “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer”.
This error is usually caused by some corrupted Windows Update data inside the systems SoftwareDisribution folder. To resolve the error, do the following:
-
Close any windows update pages you may have open
-
Go to the services module and stop the “Windows Update” service
-
Browse to the “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\” folder and delete the contents of the folder
-
Start the “Windows Update” service
-
Check for updates
